Over the past few months, I’ve been more and more interested in learning Hebrew after spending a few weeks in Israel.
When I was younger, I was put into a private Jewish school where I was taught Hebrew very poorly unfortunately. At least though, I knew how to write and read well – but I didn’t understand anything. Maybe due to lack of motivation or the way we were forced to learn it? I don’t know. What I do know though is that learning these skills at a young age were very valuable since I recently decided to start learning Hebrew on my own.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Hebrew music and just started being more interested in the Israeli culture – and as much as I share some similarities when it comes to food and traditions, I felt like I was missing something when I was in Israel – the communication skills.
I would be around my new Israeli friends and as much as we had great conversations in English, I couldn’t erase the feeling in my mind that these exchanges would be much more valuable if I spoke the same language as them.
So, in the last few weeks, I’ve been learning Hebrew through the website, Duolingo, which is an online language school that helps you learn a new language through a large variety of exercises.
At first, I thought that learning this language would only benefit me for language skills, but soon enough it actually proved me that it helps me also with my anxiety, stress levels and motivation.
Every day when I wake up, instead of starting right away my day with the blog or on creating any kind of content, I open up Duolingo and I do a few lessons. By doing so, it helps activating my motivation, my awareness and my concentration as well as focusing on my goals because once I’m done a lesson, I do a blog post and so on.
I love learning Hebrew and as hard and frustrating it gets sometimes, I feel like I’m really getting through this language and hopefully by the end of the year I will be comfortable enough to hold some conversations in Hebrew.
